Book Review : Joyful Surrender

When I see Elizabeth Elliot’s name on a book, I can trust that the message will be valuable and true! I snagged a copy of Joyful Surrender by Elizabeth herself and I have loved it!!

This book is a reprint from 1982, so the book has been around, but in 1982 I was not reading any books about my faith. So this is a brand new book to me!

I loved that many chapters were short and to the point and easy to grab and read when you have a few minutes. The messages were direct and clear and they encouraged me each time I read this book!

In fact when I read the chapter about Under Orders I asked my boys to read it as well. Elizabeth calls us to be more than hearers of the Word, similar to James’ call on our lives. She calls us to serve, to act, to do as a soldier under orders from a commanding officer. We are called to act on what God’s Word tells us.

This book is about 7 disciplines for the Believers Life :

  1. Discipline of the Mind
  2. Discipline of the Body
  3. Discipline of Place
  4. Discipline of Time
  5. Discipline of Possessions
  6. Discipline of Work
  7. Discipline of Feelings

She starts out by laying the ground work of addressing The Answer to God’s Call, then How do we know we are called, Under Orders, Grace and finally A Sovereign God and Man’s Choice.

Each early chapter leads the reader to understand the foundation of what being a follower of Christ looks like and the expectations.  Then she dives into each of the disciplines of what our life should look like in each area.

I love the wisdom that Elizabeth shares in her books. Her words can be applied today just as much as they were applicable in 1982, in fact since we have drifted so far from the truths of the Bible, her words and encouragement might be more applicable today!

NOTE : I received a copy of Joyful Surrender in exchange for an honest review.

Finding freedom and happiness in divine surrender

In our age of instant gratification and if-it-feels-good-do-it attitudes, self-discipline is often overlooked. Yet it may be one of the most important lost virtues of our time. In Joyful Surrender, former missionary and beloved author Elisabeth Elliot offers her understanding of discipline and its value for people of all times. She shows you how to

· discipline your mind, body, possessions, time, and feelings
· overcome anxiety
· change poor habits and attitudes
· trust God in times of trial and hardship
· let Him have control in all areas of life

Elliot masterfully and gently takes you through Scripture, personal stories, and incisive observations to help you discover the understanding that your fulfillment as a human being depends on your answer to God’s call to obedience.

Elisabeth Elliot (1926-2015) was one of the most perceptive and popular Christian writers of the last century. The author of more than twenty books, including Passion and Purity and The Journals of Jim Elliot, Elliot offered guidance and encouragement to millions of readers worldwide.
