Weekly Wrap Up : Sept 23rd

The-Homeschool-Mothers-Journal-graphic

In my life this week…

We had a much better week of school!  Amazing how, when you change a little thing, it can affect the whole day!!  We did not do much outside of school this week, but it was a good week and cooler weather seems to have arrived & we are all thrilled about that!!

In our homeschool this week…

We flip-flopped.  Whew.  Who knew?

I always subscribed to doing the “hard” stuff first, and then coasting the rest of the day.  For 3 years we have done math and handwriting first, then followed by reading and other stuff.

Our days were drifting past lunch time though, and I am not ready to offer afternoons to structured school.  I know we can get everything we need to do, done by lunch.  And not 3:00pm lunch.

So, this week we started with my part – reading, geography, latin, etc – and then when I was done with my portion they were left to do math and handwriting and they were done.  This has had an amazing impact on our days!  We finished by about 11:00 every day.  AMAZING!!

So this is our new system – hoping it will last!!

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

Flexibility – it is what keeps homeschool real, possible and fun.  Knowing when to flex for the kids, or for us  – is vital!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

Oh, boy!  This past week, not too much people seeing, or places going – but AG and I leave Monday for Baltimore and NYC!!  Cannot wait!!

We did have a great co-op meeting on Wednesday, even had a new family join us!  We had quite a class of young ones – it looked like real school!  It was fun to sit outside and learn all about butterflies and this AMAZING website!  {check it out, especially if you like butterflies or living science}

My favorite thing this week was…

Getting into a new groove – and enjoying each day this week!!  It was so much better than the last few weeks!!

What’s working/not working for us…

In general, things are going really well.  We are loving Ambleside Year 1 and Year 4!

Free Read time is working well too!  I have two young readers doing great things reading some great books – and moving quicker and quicker!  This has been a true blessing!

I’m reading…

Not a Fan – a great book about whether you are a “fan” or Follower of Jesus – which are you?

Reclaiming Lily – a fiction book about two sisters from China, one adopted into a family in TX and the other a doctor researching a deadly genetic disease.  So far, so good.

just a few in my pile, right now.

I’m cooking…

I am going to attempt caramels again tomorrow – last batch of chewy goodness ended up as Worther’s Hard candies – hope this time is a bit better.  I did can lots of pears this week though!

I’m grateful for…

cooler weather – it has been so nice to sit outside and enjoy the fall temps – well, almost fall temps!

I’m praying for…

Safety on our trip – I am a bit nervous going with my little girl into the Big city.  We are going to have tons of fun though!!

Weekly Wrap Up : September 2nd

In my life this week…..

Mostly, it was normal – we schooled Mon – Wed closing out most of our stuff for this week a bit early.  Good thing, since I spent most of Thursday taking my youngest son to the ER.  Not fun, but glad my week had room for the unplanned chaos.

In our homeschool this week…

We are in week 5/4 in our home – and moving right along.  Math is going surprisingly well – I think this is going to be a stellar math year for all my students.

My youngest student AG (kinder) is enjoying her handwriting practice (like the big kids) and her math too.  She is doing remarkably well!

We are really loving our English from the Roots Up  – I would recommend this book/curriculum for all homeschoolers!  My gang is enjoying it and they are really learning!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We had a great time last Friday night at our homeschool group kick-off.  We were all able to go to a local Resort Water park – my kids loved it!  It was so fun to be in a huge place filled with homeschoolers!!

My favorite thing this week was (will be)…

A birthday party on Saturday!  My boy is turning 9!!  He is so excited!!  Packages have been arriving and he can hardly stand it!  We are looking forward to having out with Robert’s grandmother, aunt, brother (and family) and us!! It is going to be a fun day with lots of yummy goodies!!

Happy Birthday My Sweet Boy!!

I am thrilled you are about to be 9!!

Things I’m working on…

I am working on coming up with a plan to really teach cooking to my kids.  I am going to work on a different thing each week – and try to get them really comfortable in the kitchen cooking, measuring, and everything that goes along with it.

I am excited to be more intentional about educating them in the kitchen, and I think they will like having a plan as well.  I am hoping to work this so it will go right along with our 4H Food Competition/Challenge stuff.

I’m grateful for…
Seeing God working miracles in my life.   It has been a a week of seeing him really working in my life and my family.  God is good!!

In my life this week…

It was up, it was down.  It was good to have some early betimes and that allowed for earlier wake up times.  I love to get up early and have a great good quiet time, and I had that opportunity several times this week.

We started school!  YEAH!!

We started this week to get things kicked off and give us a week of normal school just us, before A joins us on Monday.  I had low expectations, really just trying to get back into the routine.  It went well.  We hit the ground running, with just  a few bumps.  So, so far, so good!

In our homeschool this week…

All of our curriculum choices and our plan for the year can be found on my Monday Post – linked up with the “Not Back to School Blog Hop

We started Grammar this year – for my oldest!

And Spelling for both my older boys – and they both loved this!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

not really anywhere with anyone.  Whew.  It was good to have a slow week here at home without anyone else.  Once in a while it is good to have weeks like this.

What’s working/not working for us…

Staying inside.

If you are not tracking with where we are (Texas) we are cooking right now, and not slow cooking.  We are broiling.  You know in Texas, we like to go big or go home.  Well, we are working on a new record – I think the current record is 47 days of non stop 100+ days and we are on track to blow that out of the water.  Ughhh..  Not sure we needed a new record.  Meanwhile, we are losing chickens (2 so far) and it may get worse.

Things I’m working on…

I’m cooking…

Pioneer Woman’s Chicken & Noodles – Yummy!!

Friday is bread day again!  I am planning some muffins, made some granola to take too, and of course my yummy bread!  Reg Whole Wheat, Orange Cranberry, Cinnamon Raisin and Jalapeno Cheddar.

I’m grateful for…

My husband who has stepped up and assumed the discipline of our boys.  This has taken a huge burden off my shoulders and it is making our home much more peaceful.  Still not perfect (never will be) but I am so very thankful for a man who will step up and back me up, and more!
I’m praying for…

My friends at Tate Springs, as they said goodbye to an amazing man this week Alvie Allison.  What a portrait of a Godly Man.  He loved everyone and impacted so many people.

Well Done, Alvie!  You were a good and faithful servant.  Cannot wait to see you again on the other side!!

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

my country girl – love the dress and the boots!

In my life this week…

We are busy, busy, busy – of course, who is not?  We had friends over the first part of the week for Cole Camp Session II, it was great, except that I feel like I did not make it as fun for everyone as I could because I was neck deep in school prep!  We start in 3 days!!  Oh my!!

In our homeschool this week…

We have our building/school ready to go, a few corners still need some cleaning, but we are operational at this point!  Notebooks/Binders – a new thing for me this year, are ready & waiting for little hands.  The kids are pretty excited, they love the binders and the fun stuff we have planned, I hope their excitement does not wane!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We went bowling this week with friends – for FREE!!  Through Kids Bowl Free summer program!  Hope to go one more time, but I know we will do this more next year!!

My favorite thing this week was…

Seeing the school come together.  I love the new look and the new arrangement.  I cannot wait to be in full-blown school mode!!

What’s working/not working for us…

Death – we lost a rooster this week – and it was due to a raccoon, who is also now dead.  I hope that the death at our farm slows to a halt here now!  I told the story with more detail earlier today.

Things I’m working on…

Refining everything for Monday.  Making sure I have not bit off more than I can chew on.  Wanting things to run smooth from the start, so trying to get many of the kinks ironed out now, before my kiddos are sitting around the table with me.

Still working on my Master Planner too – so far I am loving it.  I took stuff from just about everywhere and I am thrilled to have everything I need in one place.  Now, let’s hope I do not misplace it!

I’m reading…

The Colonel’s Lady – a book I was not thrilled to get into, but I am really enjoying it now.

I’m cooking…

Bread, bread, bread, rolls and oh yeah, more bread!  We head to the Farmer’s Market first thing tomorrow morning.  Hoping we sell it all and get some spending money!!

I’m praying for…

Friends in Uganda on a mission trip from our church

rain – oh please Lord, send some rain!!

A photo to share…

AGs first fish

My little girl’s first fish!  A whopper!  He is in the freezer awaiting some friends to get fried up with.

The Homeschool Mother's Journal
In my life this week…

We have had a good week here in our neck of the woods.  Monday we ate turkey for supper – Thanksgiving – our turkey.  You can see more about it HERE.

We enjoyed seeing friends this week too, we loved blue berry picking with a bunch of friends!!  Then we invited some friends over to make some jam and play!

So it has been a fun week, all in all.

In our homeschool this week…

I have started really getting organized.  The kids are still working on getting into the routine of math every day, and handwriting too.  I feel just about prepared – of course we start in 2 weeks, so not too much time to really plan!  But I am getting excited!!

I am reading …

Kay Arthur’s When the Pain Runs Deep – very good read.  Another therapeutic one!

I did check out Winnie the Pooh from the library for my youngest and we are thoroughly enjoying this OLD version!  Love the writing, so much better than Disney’s version!!

My favorite thing this week was…

Date day!!  It has been way too long since Robert and I have had some time to ourselves – and thanks to a wonderful friend, we were able to get away for most of the day Friday!!  We got to see a movie (The Green Lantern), lunch at Sonic (thanks to a gift-card in the mail), a stroll around Fresh (and some new tea), and finally some frozen yogurt!!  It was such a nice day to have some time just us!!

Things I’m working on…

Building Binders for all my students, early versions are done for my oldest two, but I realize I need to add some more info and build a few more for the younger group.  I am also working on my Main Binder for myself – to track school and household stuff.  I am almost done with this and really looking forward to having all that great info in one place!

What is coming up ….

We are having our 1st round of Camp Cole this week with cousins coming on Wednesday.  I think we are all looking forward to some fun days with cousins and lots of playing!!  We are going to do lots of fun “science” stuff in the kitchen and lots of outside fun stuff too!!  The week after we have round 2 – it is going to be a fun 2 weeks!!
